My Favorite Moment in Life!

My brother and myself

We had our acting faces on

we walk through the double doors

Only to find the seating

I took my seat and waited my turn

This was an audition

Nothing other could it have been

the play was called To Kill a Mocking Bird

My name was called

I walked on up I did my best

What else could I give

I felt so happy I’d say I did

It was true and still I felt like that

They told kids they can go

I was told stay as were some others

We stood up on the stage once more and read the script once again

I can’t say how well or how bad I did but what I can say

Is that I tried best

And there is no denying that

I get my result soon

Before I turn into a pile of rune

That is a very good moment

For I  am pleased

But if make it I will have more to say

If  I don’t that’s okay

A little practice won’t be any trouble

Who is my Hero?

When I think of who my hero is

The only name that comes in place

Is the name of the one who was there for me

Every step of the way the one who was with me

All through school and even when I was home

The name of thy hero who I am speaking of

Could be no other then thy brother I love

His name is Caleb so strong and loyal no other than him

Could be my hero!

He was my hero when I had no one

I had no friends; I was lonely

The one I knew was just my brother

Who knew he would be my life long friend

We went and landed a part in a play

I made few friends yet he was still my main one

I could never replace my brother for someone else

He shall be my bff best friend forever

He helps me through some tough times

Like when I was punched by some guy

My brother was the one

Who stood up for me

He was so brave he was so loyal

His name is exactly what he is

I doubt that he should flee from fight for his sister

Me!

With these reasons I can say that he is my hero

No doubt need more reasons

That I can do for he has been there for me

For numerous occasions!

When I had some drama he was there

Right in front of me he’s practically my guard

Another guy yelled in my face

For what reason no one can say

When Caleb was there he figured it out

He stood up for his sister and helped her out

The reason he did oh I suppose it’s

Nothing but our Brother sister bond!

Still need some more evidence don’t worry

I got some more

When I was younger I tried to prove

That I could do the monkey bars

I jumped on and one bar two bar three bar SLIP

I fell and landed on my arm!

It hurts so bad I can not say

That I could smile through the pain

The tears fell down my cheek

Still falling down we left to go call my father

I saw my brother and saw me

I told him what happened

not meaning to freak him out

He was worried for me

He loved me so much he cried for his sister

Is this enough evidence for me to prove

That my brother is my hero

And not just a good one but

The best one I could ever ask for

He helps me out and will never stop

He loves his little sister and you know what

I love him too he should know

why wouldn’t I love him

For he has given me all I could ask

A guard, personal protection, and a bond that shall never break!

Types of Raingear

They’re hundreds of different rain gear options. Today I will be telling you about a few of them!

The first option to choose is Waterproof/ breathable. This stops the water from getting through to your skin. If you want to do and lung and limb pumping activities then this is the right gear to use!

Next, you have the water-resistant. This is also breathable. It can handle light rain for a short amount of time. However, it can not handle precipitation lingers and rain that comes down sideways!

Third we have waterproof/ non breathable. An example of this is a rain slicker or even an emergency poncho. This keeps the rain out only when you are sitting or standing still. Although, if you exertion then you will sweat that will cause the inside of your jacket to be slick on the inside so then it will no longer be usable. The one really good thing about this is that it is very cheap! One other bad thing about it is that it doesn’t take that much wind to make a poncho largely ineffective.

The fourth thing is windproof. Any waterproof jacket is also windproof. You will find with windproof technology, usually some type of laminate, are considered water resistant!

This is me reporting to you about science and rain gear so be sure to slip that cursor onto the subscribe button and come back to Learning in Pajamas!

Spring break :What I was up to

For the last week I have been on spring break! Today I will be telling you all about what I was doing!

The first day of vacation my family and I went to a few beach bathing suit stores to get swimsuits! At first no one knew that we were going to the beach, however, me being me, every time I would see the beach I would say “beach”! Now when you’re at the beach you will find that at every other turn you can see the beach, so imagine saying that over and over!  you can tell I LOVE the beach! My mother and I got these really cute swimsuits from a real beach shop! That is kind of important to me because I ALWAYS got my swimsuits from wal-mart or target! This was my first real beach bathing suit! Once we got all of our necessities: chairs, towels, sunscreen, and water, we were off to the beach! The beach that we went to was called Neptune Beach! My brother and I had fun while our parents watched! One time my mom got in the ocean and she tried, note that I said “tried”, to teach me to “catch a wave”! Sadly, the wave toppled on top of me! Soon after that it was time to go home!

For the next two days my brother was sick so we didn’t really do anything.

That Tuesday we had a guitar lesson. For the first time in a while my mom got to be a part of this lesson! My grandma came in and she joined the lesson! We watched TV for a while then we ate. This day wasn’t as exciting l but I got to see my grandma and that is something!

Later on in the vacation we went to the beach again but this time it was a different beach! On this beach there was a tide pool! When we were in the ocean I met this one girl her name was Fiona! We had a lot fun! We even found some really cool shells! Some of them even had holes in them so I plan on making them into necklaces!

On the last Friday of our vacation my mom, grandma, grandpa, brother, uncle, and myself went to see Steel Magnolias! The director of the latest Play I was in played the main character in the play! It was a very well done production!

That ends my vacation, for more about me and what’s going on in my life, be sure to come back to Learning in Pajamas!

Science Fair

Last weekend my dad, my brother, and I went to the science fair! The science fair had many different booths.! Most of the booths were very interesting! Today I will tell you what my first and second favorite booths were!

When we first got there we were welcomed by a Barnes and Noble booth. Previously we bought snap circuit robots. Well at the booth they had snap circuits so I was very excited about that! Also, at another booth ,shown by Mayo clinic, you got to be a brain surgeon. You also got to test “pee”, it was really apple juice, and you got to perform CPR! I think I did a really good job at being a brain surgeon! That was my favorite booth, my second favorite booth was the booth about : How to make ice cream! I liked this booth because 1. Ice cream is awesome 2. Ice cream is awesome and 3. I love ice cream!! To make ice cream you get a bag and put salt crystals and water in it. Next you get a smaller bag and put milk, sugar, and flavoring! This was my second favorite booth! They have science fairs a each year and they are hosted at UNF!

Thank you for reading this post come back to Learning In Pajamas for more!

A New World: Part 3

A New World: Part 3

As I was floating through the air in my rocket my only thought was “I get to see my family”. Which is okay, but….. I could have been thinking about what I was gonna eat for dinner, what that note from the queen was meaning, or even if I was even gonna make it through this! The only thing that matters to me is helping my mom get better. Then out of nowhere there was a big bang! It came from the slumber chambers. I got up and started tiptoeing towards my room when I heard whispers from behind me close to the door! I took a look around but I couldn’t  see or find anything. I assume that I am just hearing things but it still seems strange. What seems like a few hours later I feel like I have stopped so I look out the window and there are hundreds of people sitting around including the news, NASA, and the FBI! I step out in the warm sun I feel the warmth rushing through my body. I walk out of my rocket and start strutting out as if I were on a catwalk. I suddenly get overwhelmed with questions. I rush through the crowd of people. I finally find my house in a crowd of what used to be familiar but now is almost unrecognizable.

I walk in and call for my mom. As I shut the door a man walks in from the dining room confused.

“How did you get in?” he asked me. “ I live here. The real question is how did you get in here!?” I replied.

For some reason I couldn’t even faintly remember who this guy was! “Hey! Do you know where my mom is? I need to see her!” I yelled

“Wait a minute! I recognize you you’re Kaylee Mariner!” He exclaimed “I bought this house after you’re mom went to the hospital!” “ the hospital.” I whispered “ we need to go!” I shouted at him

After he told me which hospital she was in I demanded him to drive me! After a while I was very nervous to see her but also exited! I was also feeling gloomy. What caused her to go to the hospital. Also the fact that my house was full of this guys stuff, yet there are no boxes, tells me that that he has been there for a while! Which also means she has been at the hospital for a long time.

When we arrived I jumped out of his black and blue Jeep! When we opened the doors to the hospital I was shocked. The room was completely empty, except for the nurse at the front desk. I ran up to the nurse and asked her about my mom. “ OHHH. your mom was, Lesley mariner, she died years ago!” I felt a tear about to drip off of  my blood red face so quickly wiped it away. “ do you know” I stuttered “how she died?”

“ she died from Hydrocephalus one of the worst brain diseases, you can go read about it in that pamphlet over there.” she pointed to pamphlets.

“ I don’t WANT to read about it I WANT my mom back!” I couldn’t take it any longer. “ I no family, I have no friends, I have no home, and worst of all I have no mom!” I started to pour out crying. Not knowing what to do.

Then, I woke up. It was all a dream I was so happy! “ where am I!?” I yelled.

Someone came up to me and told me I was in the hospital! Shocked I yelled for my mom! “Honey I am your mom don’t you recognize me?!”she told me confused yet still joyful because I am awake. “ Mom… how long was I here”

“ 5 years.” she replied. I gave her a hug and cried again. Mom walked out of the room and tons and nurses came in! They all asked me questions. Soon they told me I could get up. But I would be in a wheelchair for a while. They told me that they will push me to my mom’s car while she gets it so I let them put me in a wheelchair!

I get in the car and have a silent ride home. When we get home mom introduces me to netflix and shows me tons of shows. We start binge watching stranger things. As we get to episode 4 I fall asleep. I wake up in a few hours and have dinner. I guess this is my life now! I am just happy to be home with my mom!

Lion of the North: Book report

In this book about the Thirty Years’ War, a 16-year-old named Malcolm Graheme is a Scottish boy who volunteered to fight with the military forces controlled by Gustavus Adolphus. When the Emperor of Austria decided to get rid of Protesters from Germany, the Swedish King fought the terrorism that they had to suffer through throughout villages whose population was unforgivingly lowered by the Hun invasion. The Scottish displayed the courage of Gustavus’ army by fighting their way across a Germany that was tormented by religious persecution. Malcolm went through tasks where the possible outcome was dangerous, but his quick thinking and bad manners gave him the struggle against a cruel opponent.

My favorite part was when Duke Franz Albert faked a conversion to the Protestant Faith and was warmly received by the king. He sought for an opportunity to assassinate the king before the battle, but was unsuccessful. During the battle he rode behind the king and at a convenient moment shot him twice in the back. Then he rode off to tell Wallenstein of the death of the king. I liked this part because he failed but he kept trying. This may be a strange reason for why I like this part but it does not change the fact that I like it. Another reason why I like this part is because when he failed he didn’t get caught trying to kill him, he just kept going with his life then when he did succeed in killing him, he pretended like he didn’t kill him.

My least favorite part was when King Gustavus had a hunch that he would not return from the battle with the Roman Catholic imperialists. he is showing his 5 year old daughter, Christiana, to the Diet that the queen must eat and scolding everyone to respect her as queen in the event that he did not return. His wife (the queen) is crying because she is now very worried that her 5 year old daughter will have to become the queen if king Gustavus dies in the war. This is sad because he does die and now the 5 year old has to be the queen. I did not like this because he has to explain that he might die and in a 5 year olds shoes that may be hard to understand and accept. I feel another reason why I don’t like it is because I don’t tend to like sad stuff. This is sad because he thinks he is going to die and he wants the best for his child but he either has to get rid of the throne or give it to his daughter and even though it’s hard he had to give it to her if he died and to me this is really glum. Upsettingly he did die and he was killed by Duke Franz Albert. I like that he didn’t give up on killing the king but I don’t like that he killed the king and gave the king’s daughter no choice but to take the throne!

This is my book report about The Lion of the north thank you for watching and come back to Learning In Pajamas for more from me! Also, don’t forget to read all about the author.

About the author:

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G._A._Henty “G. A. Henty was born in Trumpington, near Cambridge. He was a sickly child who had to spend long periods in bed. During his frequent illnesses he became an avid reader and developed a wide range of interests which he carried into adulthood. He attended Westminster School, London, and later Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he was a keen sportsman. He left the university early without completing his degree to volunteer for the Army Hospital Commissariat when the Crimean War began. He was sent to the Crimea and while there he witnessed the appalling conditions under which the British soldier had to fight. His letters home were filled with vivid descriptions of what he saw. His father was impressed by his letters and sent them to The Morning Advertiser newspaper which printed them. This initial writing success was a factor in Henty’s later decision to accept the offer to become a special correspondent, the early name for journalists now better known as war correspondents.

Shortly before resigning from the army as a captain in 1859 he married Elizabeth Finucane. The couple had four children. Elizabeth died in 1865 after a long illness and shortly after her death Henty began writing articles for the Standard newspaper. In 1866 the newspaper sent him as their special correspondent to report on the Austro-Italian War where he met Giuseppe Garibaldi. He went on to cover the 1868 British punitive expedition to Abyssinia, the Franco-Prussian War, the Ashanti War, the Carlist Rebellion in Spain and the Turco-Serbian War. He also witnessed the opening of the Suez Canal and travelled to Palestine, Russia and India.

Henty was a strong supporter of the British Empire all his life; according to literary critic Kathryn Castle: “Henty…exemplified the ethos of the new imperialism, and glorified in its successes”. Henty’s ideas about politics were influenced by writers such as Sir Charles Dilke and Thomas Carlyle

Henty once related in an interview how his storytelling skills grew out of tales told after dinner to his children. He wrote his first children’s book, Out on the Pampas in 1868, naming the book’s main characters after his children. The book was published by Griffith and Farran in November 1870 with a title page date of 1871. While most of the 122 books he wrote were for children, he also wrote adult novels, non-fiction such as The March to Magdala and Those Other Animals, short stories for the likes of The Boy’s Own Paper and edited the Union Jack, a weekly boy’s magazine.

His children’s novels typically revolved around a boy or young man living in troubled times. These ranged from the Punic War to more recent conflicts such as the Napoleonic Wars or the American Civil War. Henty’s heroes – which occasionally included young ladies – are uniformly intelligent, courageous, honest and resourceful with plenty of ‘pluck’ yet are also modest These virtues have made Henty’s novels popular today among many Christians and Homeschoolers.

Henty usually researched his novels by ordering several books on the subject he was writing on from libraries, and consulting them before beginning writing. Some of his books were written about events (such as the Crimean War) that he witnessed himself. Hence these books are thus written with greater detail as Henty drew upon his first-hand experiences of people, places, and events.

On 16 November 1902, Henty died aboard his yacht in Weymouth Harbour, Dorset, leaving unfinished his last novel, By Conduct and Courage, which was completed by his son Captain C.G. Henty.

Henty is buried in Brompton Cemetery, London.”

The Holocaust!

The other day I went to the MOSH! MOSH stands for Museum of Science and History! We went to the MOSH for a special event that is going on! This event was about Anne Frank and other Jewish people who had to undergo the Holocaust.

The exhibit that we went to showed a timeline of both Anne frank and the Nazi evolution. The timelines were on different walls and each year it got worse and worse. On one part of the timeline, it said that the Nazis would secretly take black kids and make it so they can’t have babies. they did this because they were trying to get the perfect country and to do that they need the perfect race. The Nazis also murdered all of the disabled people even if they weren’t Jewish. They had a movie going on in the room over , all of the information that was on the wall was in the movie.. However my mom is a big Holocaust history fan and because of this we had already seen this movie years earlier so we didn’t watch it again. By the time we got to the end, of the timeline, I was upset because of all the horrid things the Nazis did to people. We wrote a little note on how we felt after reading these.

I hope this will never happen again because 11 million people were killed during the Holocaust. six million were Polish citizens. Three million were Polish Jews and another three million were Polish Christians. This was a very good learning experience, even though it made me very sad, I am glad that I got to do this. Thank you MOSH for hosting such a great exhibit!

A Christmas Carol

Recently I have been reading the book a Christmas Carol by  Charles Dickens. Today I will be telling you all about it.

The basic idea of the book is a man named Scrooge who has absolutely no Christmas spirit. During the night of Christmas Eve, he gets visited by three ghosts. The ghost of Christmas past, present, and future. With their help, he changes his point of view and starts to love Christmas. He also becomes a much nicer person.

The ghost of Christmas past shows Scrooge his past as a child which then reminds him how much he loved Christmas. However this one ghost can’t cure Scrooge’s hatefulness by itself. That is when Scrooge gets visited by the ghost of Christmas present. This ghost shows Scrooge how even the poorest of people can still be happy and hopeful even though they are poor and don’t have much. Last of all the ghosts is the ghost of Christmas future. All of the Christmas carol movies and books show that this is the scariest of all the ghosts due to the fact that it looks shuddersome and acts creepy not to mention that is shows when you die! All of these ghosts shows scrooge that he needs to have more Christmas spirit and needs to be more jolly!

In the end, Scrooge is worried that he missed Christmas because this was his first time visited by ghosts so he doesn’t know what to gets a young boy to get him a turkey and he enjoys his Christmas.

This story has been made and re-made many times. All of the movies have the same basic plot but are told in many different ways! For example there is the original Christmas Carol movie, Scrooged, and many others.

Happy New Year to all and to all a good year from the learning in pajamas blog.

The Black Death

Recently, I have been learning about the black plague, also known as black death. Today I will be telling you all about it!

The black death was, in my teacher’s words, an epidemic plague that attacked Europe in the 19th century! This plague was very contagious and horrific if you got it. Some of the symptoms of the plague were: fevers, chills, aching, and large boils on the skin.

smallpox_depicted_in_the_toggenburg_bible

If you got the plague you would want to see the doctor. Today we have some very smart doctors that tell us all about germs and how they spread! Well, back then doctors didn’t know about germs so they didn’t know how the plague spread. If they had known about germs I think that they could have possibly cured the plague or at least developed the theories for the future!

Many people didn’t know where or why they got this plague. Others thought that it was a judgement from God. To gain favor with god, they would publicly whip themselves. This might not have helped but it did give others hope that the plague would be over very soon!

Ring around the rosy. Pocket full of posies. Ashes, ashes, we all fall down.

As a kid we would all sing the classic nursery rhyme “Ring Around The Rosy”. As kindergartener to second grade, I was not taught the actual meaning of the song.  I  had not even thought about what the words meant until my brother had told me it was a “bad” song. Now In seventh grade finally I know what they mean!

Ring around the rosy: the plague would cause large boils on the skin and there would be a ring around it.

Pocketful of posies: many people would be dying but, there were too many bodies to bury so they would just burn the people so the stench of death was all around them. They would collect flowers and put them as close to their noses as possible so that they would not have to smell the stench of death.

Ashes Ashes we all fall down: well when you burn someone, also known as cremating them, you get ashes, and they burned a lot of people so they had a lot of ashes. We all fall down was all of the people who were dying. My Father had a very good thought he said there is another possible interpretation. “The ashes would float into the sky, but as we all know: what goes up, must come down. We all fall down as ashes. We are all going to die.”

As you can see the classic Ring Around The Rosy was not as innocent as we thought!

🎉🎆Happy New Year🎉🎆 from me, CaityCakes, to you! I hope you’ll join me for more homeschool adventures in 2017.
