The Battles of Hastings!

In history class I learned about the Battle of Hastings!

The battle of Hastings marked the start of Norman conquest and the end of the Viking era in 1066. Also in 1066 European power got added to England’s domain.

A man named William of Normandy made an attempt to win a battle! This battle lasted an entire day! luckily he and his army won, because of this he was then named William the Conqueror. Another war was the Battle of the Stamford Bridge. This war was a very bloody war and many people died. Unlike the battle of Hastings the Saxons won this battle, because of this win, William was crowned king on Christmas Day. The battle of the Stamford Bridge started because many people believed they should be king! The battle of the Stamford Bridge played a big role in the Battle of Hastings.  The role was to see who the next king was to be, because at the time many people wanted to be the next king! The battle of Hastings was won by the Normans this is when it started a new era, the Norman conquest era.

As King William was leaving the battle he was either shot in the eye by an arrow or he was shot in the back of the head. The reason I don’t know how King William was killed is because, there are many stories of how he was killed, but nobody knows for sure how he was killed! By the end of the war the Saxons were fleeing the sight and King William then got killed!

English semester report

Throughout the first half of my class I have been reading and learning a lot in my English class. Today I will be doing a semester report on everything that I have done or learned in my English class!

When I started this year I began to learn about plot! First, I learned about exposition, which means introduction. I learned that in the exposition you have to introduce the main character or characters. Also, the setting is introduced in the exposition. The book that I was reading at the time was: The Dragon and the Raven by G.A. Henty! As my teacher says, “He does a very great job at explaining the setting!” However, even though I did not like this book I would recommend this book to people who like to read history, but in a story mode! The next part of the plot is the rising action. When you reach the rising action in a book you learn about a problem and sub-plots. A sub-plot is a mini plot in the story where you have a slight problem or issue that gets solved in the climax! Also the rising action builds up to the climax! The climax is when you have the big/main problem that the main character or characters need to solve.  When an author is writing his/her story they have to try there best so that you don’t know the outcome or even what the climax is going to be about!  That is when you can see their personal writing style very well! Coming right after the climax is the falling action! In my teacher’s words “it is one of the hardest parts of the story to write effectively.” in the climax you are building up the tension but you have to be careful when you release the tension in the rising action you could write something that is expected, or something that can be “called” before it has even happened! Last you have the resolution. In the resolution the author is just ending/finishing the story! If they leave too many cliffhangers in the  resolution the readers will be expecting another chapter! If they don’t have another chapter than either they will have to add on and write another book or they’ll have to expect bad reviews on the book due to the fact that the readers are left confused and/or expecting more!

The next subject that I focused on was genre! I have previously made an essay on this subject check it out in the link above! The definition of genre, according to my English teacher, is: “a term for any category of literature or any other form of art or entertainment based on some set of stylistic criteria” in most books you can immediately tell what genre it is. In non-fiction books you read it and you come out knowing more and also knowing that that book was telling you facts not a story. It may have been told in a story like way. In my opinion I prefer that way because then it’s more like a story and to me a lot more fun!

I have also been reading books in this class. One of my favorite books was Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland! Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a book written by Charles Dodgson also known as: Lewis Carroll. It is about a girl named Alice who fell down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world with all “peculiar” creatures. The story, even though is a fiction book, has logic, helping the story last in both adult’s and children’s memories. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the nonsense genre. That is the summary of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland! I would rate this book as a 9 because for me it is very crazy and odd. However I love the storyline and it is a fun story to read!

Another book that I have read that I really enjoyed was A Christmas Carol. I have also written a book report on this. Check it out in the link! A Christmas Carol is a story by Charles Dickens. A Christmas Carol tells the story of a bitter old man named Ebenezer Scrooge and how he changed his personality in just one night because of visits by the ghost of his previous business partner, Jacob Marley, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future! This is the summary of a Christmas Carol! I would rate this book a 10 because it’s a classic story that everyone knows and is very well written!

This is my semester report on what I have learned in English! Thank You for reading this post! Come to my blog for more learning in pajamas!

The shocking truth about multimeters!

In science today we learned about multimeters! With my dad’s permission and supervision,  I got to test a few things out.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The first thing I did was test a  AA battery. To test a battery, you first have to identify which side is positive and which side is negative. After I did that, I stuck one lead on each side and waited for the voltage to show on the meter. The voltage was 1.56 VDC (volts direct current).

After that I tested an outlet on the wall! That time I had to be very careful not to touch any metal because if I did I could get shocked!!. Most outlets and switches range from 110-120 VAC (volts alternating current) when they are “healthy.” Our outlet was 120.6v!!

I then tested a 9 volt battery, the voltage was 9.39! I also tested a C battery, which had a voltage of 1.627.  Just for fun, I tested another AA battery. This time the voltage on it was 1.514. That means this battery had less power than the first battery that I tested!

I also learned that light bulbs do not store electricity as it measured 0 volts! 💡😎

Keep coming to Learning in Pajamas to find out what else I am doing!!

Soldering

Today my dad and I learned how to SOLDER!!!

We used a soldering iron and solder to make an led light circuit! At first I had no idea on how to use it. Soon, I picked up the soldering iron and started to solder! It was difficult at first because we didn’t know how to get the solder onto the tiny circuit board. Eventually my dad looked it up and then we finally knew how to do it correctly. The way you solder on a circuit board is by putting your iron on the copper rings around the holes, let that sit for just a few seconds, and then put the solder on the iron, and move it up and down until it is melted! Once that is completed then you can now say you can solder! No matter what you do, DO NOT touch the iron, it is extremely HOT!!!!

Ten Good and Bad Tings About My Life

I read this book called: Ten Good and Bad Things About my Life (So Far) .

I loved reading this book because it was about this girl who was in the fifth grade and on the first day of school she was assigned to write an essay, and include an outline, of her summer vacation. During most of the book it seems like she is talking to you and explaining her summer. You can, however, tell that she is writing this down because of the font changes. In the end, it shows a copy of her outline, and to me she said a lot for the small amount that was on her paper.

I can feel where she is coming from, in most of what she is saying.

I got this book from the public library near me.

I hope you can’t wait for more on learning in pajamas

New World

“Hello”! I yell I can’t understand anyone and I don’t think they can understand me .

It all started when I was transported to a new planet. I don’t know where I am, but I know it’s not Venus because I have been there before. I try to understand but all they ever give me are books. Soon, I am piled with them I can’t help but read them. I realize they are trying to help me! they gave me books called English to Borg, Spanish to Borg, French to Borg, and lots of others. Eventually, I can sort of understand them but I still have to read my book.

Out of nowhere I heard screams everyone bowed down but me. I can’t help but to be scared for who knows what that means. Then all alien eyes were on me waiting me to bow down. I got the point really soon after that I got on my knees  “boinharyoi”she yelled “in English that means………time to eat?” I read “oh no” I wanted to run but I couldn’t I will die no matter what I do. When we all got up I hid behind a building hoping what they call lunch won’t call me dinner. All I heard were rattles. “I was right” I whispered.  my friends on earth and I made a deal about what aliens ate and I said rattlesnakes. I peer passed the building and see everyone eating but as I look back “YOUR MAJESTY!” she looked confused I realized I said that in English so I said it in Borg, she was still confused I bowed down and then she got angry. Why are you not eating?” she asked in Borg. So I told her I wasn’t hungry. She told me that her customs stated that “all new Borgs or aliens must EAT”. she looked around the corner, so I did as well, EVERYTHING was gone that means that I do NOT have to eat! Then the queen offered me to stay in the castle and of course I accepted. In the morning I was sent to the dining room and the waiters gave me what looked like a Poptart and really smelled good. I took one bite into it and it tasted just like fresh cherries. Later on I found out that that was not a pop tart it was….. Rattlesnake!!! That’s when I found out that I like rattlesnake.  The world is rocky in some areas and others it’s slimy. The Borgish people are purple and pink for girls and blue and orange for guys. I saw some of the boys with broncos t-shirt so I told them “go broncos”!! then EVERYONE said “DUCK” in Borg out of nowhere flying broncos were everywhere. Everyone started circling me, I was scared, and I didn’t know what to do. All know is that this is one strange planet and at this point I hope this is all a dream!

TO BE CONTINUED…………….

My field trip

Field trips: on 9-6-16 I went to the beach with my family to go fishing. At the beach my dad and aunt and uncle had to teach me how to fish since the first time i went i didn’t even have a hook on my rod and it was so long ago that forgot. When we got to the beach we quickly got started the first person to catch something was me! I, sadly, caught a dead crab.

After a little while of fishing my brother and I started to play in the water. While we were playing the current would move us around so when we were trying to avoid a spot we would go to it any ways!

Soon after that we went back to fishing. I felt strong tugs on my fishing rod so I started pulling the string out of the water and reeling it in.

image1

I got a flounder!! Eventually the fish was out of the water! Then the hook broke off! I was very, very upset because now that fish has to live with a hook in it.

When we were heading back home we got to ride the ferry! It was cool because then I got to say that I rode a boat and I could find out if I have sea sickness!

image4

Early into the trip while my uncle was fishing some type of shell came up on the shore. That is why I was assigned to find what this shell was the shell looked like this:

image3

The way I found out what this was is I looked up strange shells at the beach and It turns out it is called a horseshoe crab shell so I looked up more pictures and found out whatever killed it ate all of it.  If it was still alive it would have looked like this:

My day at the beach was awesome! I hope to share some more fun times with you on learning in pajamas!

Pajama Book Report: Judy Moody and the Bad Luck Charm

I read the book Judy Moody and the Bad Luck Charm by Megan McDonald. In my opinion it was a very enjoyable book! I am going to inform you why I think that.

Every book has an exposition or, in other words, an introduction. In the introduction it generally explains or lets you know who the main character is, where they are , and the position or situation they are in.

In Judy Moody it explains that she is the main character she claims to have a lucky penny that, of course, gives her good luck. It also tells you that she is in a restaurant with her family.

Next , we have the rising action. As you can tell from the title this is when the tension starts to rise and you can sort of feel like something  good or bad is going to happen.

I could feel the tension rising when Judy kept getting really fabulous luck I wasn’t expecting some of the things that happened.

The climax is when the most tension is “in the air,” or when the most important part is happening. That would be when Judy’s friend Jessica invited her to go with her to Washington D.C. to watch her pig while she was in a spelling bee. Along with that, a “mini climax” would be when she was watching the pig– it ran off and Judy couldn’t find it.

After the climax is the falling action. That is when everything is starting to settle down and there is not as much tension as there was before.

That would be when Judy found the pig and went back to the hotel room.  As well as when Jessica came back from the spelling bee to tell them her place.

Then. in the end is the resolution this is how it ended up or how thing went for everyone.

In Judy Moody, it turns out that Jessica won the spelling bee, Judy got to see the President of the United States, and it turned out she lost the penny BUT she still had her good luck so it ended up that she didn’t need the penny, she was naturally lucky!

Those are the five parts of a plot and that is the story of Judy Moody and the Bad Luck Charm!

First year of homeschool: What I expect to achieve, what I’m excited about, & what I’m NOT excited about!

This year I am looking forward to all of the cool things I get to learn! Adding on to that, the projects I get to do. I am very happy that I get to do a lot of things that wouldn’t have even been an option in public school! This year I want to learn how to build specific things, harvest and can food, plus I could be able to learn how to cook.

Later on in this year I will be able to create my own robot!! Yep, thats right a real robot I might even be smart enough to make it talk! I expect to achieve straight A’s, to finish school possibly maybe earlier than others, and to find myself having A LOT of fun!

Now, what I am not looking forward to…..That would be having to do more chores. Since I will be home longer than ever, I WILL be expected to do that.

I AM EXCITED TO DO MORE LEARNING IN PAJAMAS!!!!
