Music in the 1960’s

After years of practice the world’s music has changed a lot! We’ve made improvements to our technology and the way our music sounds! Today I will be talking about bands and artists in the 1960’s.

Elvis Presley:

Elvis Aaron Presley was an American singer and actor. Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as the “King of Rock and Roll” or simply “the King”. Elvis was born on January 8,1935 and he died on August 16, 1977. His death was very sad for many people.

The Beatles:

The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. With members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They came to America in 1965. This was when they made most of their money, this is because they became nationally famous. At this time, they even made a film named, The Yellow Submarine. Their albums were purchased over 500,000 times. After they made their way to America they changed what they wrote their songs about. Instead of being clean they changed it to drugs, politics, and war.

The Rolling Stones:

The members of The Rolling Stones are Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, and Charlie Watts. This British group catered to the dragged out, drunken culture of the 1960’s. One of their best hits was called “Satisfaction”. This band formed in 1962.

This started the British Invasion, which was a phenomenon that occurred in the mid-1960s when rock and pop music acts from the United Kingdom, as well as other aspects of British culture, became popular in the United States, and significant to the rising counterculture on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Counterculture:

This was a group of hippies who wanted, Alcohol, psychedelic drugs, free sex, and no responsibility.  They were known as Hippies and Flower children. They had a giant music festival where they celebrated for three days, love, drugs, and music.

Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge

Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge are the 29th and 30th presidents of the united states! Warren G. Harding, was involved in many scandals and many illegal operations. Coolidge wasn’t really interested in that so, now he is labeled as a “weak” president.

Warren G. Harding is the 29th President of the United States He was elected in 1923 and he left the office in 1923. This was the beginning of world war 1 so, Harding had to help keep the united states safe meanwhile governing the country. Harding started his career as a journalist, he worked with newspapers. In 1891, Harding’s wife wanted him to go into politics so, he did. Harding went to serve as the Ohio State Senator. This was his very first elected and political position. Harding is known as one of the worst presidents ever because there were many scandals during his presidency.

One of the very worst scandals, when Harding was president, is known as the Teapot Dome Scandal. This was when a federal Cabinet member stole government property and leased it illegally. Then after somebody bought he kept the money. This put a sore spot on Harding’s career

After these scandals, he had a stroke. The stroke didn’t kill him, but it did limit him from doing a lot of things. Going forward in time, he died of a heart-attack.

We now move on to Calvin Coolidge the 30th president.

Coolidge, Harding’s vice president at the time, was going to bed when he got the news that Harding had died. On August 2nd, 1923 Coolidge became the new president!

Calvin Coolidge was born on Independence Day! He was born in Vermont, but in order for him to get is college degree he had to move to Massachusetts. Coolidge’s planned to be a lawyer but, he didn’t have enough money to pay for Law-school. Instead of going to Law School he worked with a local law firm so that he could still to learn law. This was an option for people who didn’t have sufficient funds to go to Law School. Afterward he was admitted to the Bar for Massachusetts.

Later, Coolidge was elected Governor of Massachusetts. Soon, the Boston Police Strike of 1919 occurred. Coolidge, even though it was unnecessary, decided to help, this impressed many government officials. They were so impressed with him that they elected him as the Vice President to Warren G. Harding.

Coolidge was inaugurated by his own father! He was inaugurated again the next day. To make it not illegal they inaugurated him again out in public.

Coolidge had policies that would get rid of banks that were making the economy worse. By doing this he was allowing the stocks to go up an up and up. Eventually the investors were scared that it would plummet, they started to back off which then made the stocks fall.

Harding and Coolidge had two different ways of being a president Coolidge may be considered a weak president, but he was a very good president, even though he left his presidency just before the Great Depression, he still brought the economy to its peak before it fell.

This was an essay about President Harding and President Coolidge! Be sure to come back to Learning in Pajamas for more from me!

Performing Arts (8th Grade Critical Thinking Assignment#23)

There are many types of performances, these performances can impact our daily lives. There are also many places where you can see performances and be in them. Along with these we have many different type of performers. These performers can be live, on a TV show, in a movie, and many other things.

Types of performing arts:

Drama

Drama is a well-known type of performing art! This type of performance can be very entertaining! You can watch a book or even a script just come alive right on the stage. These performances can be heartwarming, sad, happy, or even funny. I have been to many plays, I have seen sad ones and I’ve seen funny ones. They can be from any type of genre.

Dance

Dance is another type of performing art. Dancing is very similar to drama. These dances, depending on the music, can be very sad, like a tragic love story, or they could be a funny “Broadway” dance. Dance can be any genre…and you don’t really have to be super flexible! There are many types of dances, for example, there is contemporary, ballroom, tap, jazz, hip hop, and many others.

Live Art

My final example of a performing art is Live art. This one is a bit tricky because it is open to interpretation. Sometimes it can be seen as weird,  however it can be a beautiful thing. When an artist draws, it usually, comes from the heart. They take what they are feeling from the inside and put it on a canvas. That is why it a beautiful thing.  There are many different types of live art. There is sculpting, animation, photography, painting, and more.  Art is everywhere in our lives, even if we don’t realize it.

From these examples, you can tell that there are a lot of performing arts. You can also tell that each performing art has multiple categories within.

There are many different performers. Some times these people perform in front of random people! In my opinion, they’ve got to be very brave to do this. It is very difficult to go out and sing or act in front of a crowd, I know this from personal experience. Some people have stage fright so back-stage they may be freaking out because they are terrified of messing up. In some cases, the person will end up going on the stage and doing terrifically!

According to my research, some notable performers who have had stage fright are:

Megan Fox

Amanda Seyfried

As you can tell, even professionals sometimes have stage fright. It is a very common thing to have. Although, there are ways to reduce your stage fright.

  • You can change your focus to something else, quit scaring yourself about messing up.
  • Visualize your success. Always focus on your strength and ability to handle challenging situations.
  • Prepare your material in advance and read it aloud to hear your voice.

The world is very entertaining, you can never get bored from all the different types of performances you can go see! You might even be in one of these performances. If you are in a performance and you have stage fright, you aren’t alone! Many other performers have stage fright, even those who perform on a regular basis, and remember you can reduce the fright or even get rid of it completely!

I chose this topic because I perform in plays a lot. I also sing karaoke! I also chose this topic because I love to watch performances from all genres. I think that if I can share all about the arts more people will get interested and maybe find their passion in life. While writing this I learned about many actors and actresses who have stage fright. Also, I learned that there are many different types of performances, such as band and live art.

One more type of art is writing, so I hope you enjoyed reading this piece of art on Learning in Pajamas!

Is It Better To Stay Emotionally Detached Or Care Deeply For Something? (8th Grade English Assignment #22)

As sad as it may be, sometimes doctors have to deal with the the death of their patients during an operation or other medical practices. They have to stay strong emotionally when this happens. In such a case, would it be better for the doctor to have made an emotional connection or remain indifferent?

Whenever children get toys from their parents on Christmas day, the children usually forget what they got within the next few months. If these kids cared deeply about their gifts would they remember it for a longer time?

In the career span of a ER doctor, there is a sad certainly that they will have patients that will die. However, this fact doesn’t make it seem any less important to the doctor. Therefore, most ER doctors stay emotionally detached from their patients. I would say that this is a good and bad thing. It is good because if patients parish, the doctors didn’t make that strong of a bond with the patient and they will be able to continue working. Although, if they do make a connection with the patient they might be deviated from the loss and not bet able to do their job. Doctors are not the only occupation that has to face this type of issue, police officers, emergency field medics, and members in the armed forces all must deal with such challenges. These men and women must be capable to see death or else they can’t do their jobs very well.

When children wake up on Christmas morning they head down to tree and have fun with their family opening gifts. Many times the kids can’t remember, ber what they go for Christmas that year. Would it be better if these children didn’t get as many gifts if they won’t even remember what they were? In my opinion, the experience is what counts.  Instead, on Christmas morning maybe their family should go on a family trip or get a family gift. This will potentially allow them to care deeply about each Christmas and make memories to last a lifetime.

From this you can tell that when it comes to a case of medical reasons it is probably for the best to remain emotionally detached. In other situations that aren’t life threatening it may be better to care deeply. In a situation where a doctor doesn’t show a connection with their patient, that patient may not feel comfortable. Therefore they won’t get the best service.

These are a few examples of circumstances where remaining emotionally detached may for better or for worse. I care deeply about Learning in Pajamas and I hope you do too, so show your love by leaving a like and following.

Do we Learn More From our Mistakes or Our Successes (8th Grade English Assignment #13)

Today’s English assignment topic is, do we learn more from our mistakes or our success.

I think that people learn the best from their mistakes. The reason I feel this way is because when you make a mistake you learn how to improve. However, when you succeed you don’t really learn anything. Also, when you make a mistake you learn that it is not good, or even okay do to something. When you never mess up or do something bad, you won’t learn those things.

However, if you do learn from your successes, you would most likely be learning the fact that you knew your stuff. I think that you can’t really learn anything in life if all you do is succeed. If all you do is succeed then you cannot accept the fact that you lost or didn’t win something. Therefore, I think it’s good to make mistakes or else you never learn anything valuable. For example, let’s say every time I audition for a play I get the part, this has been going on for a few years. Then one day, I decide to audition for one more play this year. I barely work hard, because I assume that since I’ve gotten any part I’ve wanted, I can get this one without a doubt! Once I get to the audition room I sort out the “real” competition. While on-stage I get cocky and don’t play the part as well as I could have. After a few weeks the cast list is out, and I am not on it.  I end up freaking out and very upset. Or I could take this experience and learn from my mistake of getting cocky and not even trying.

Another example is getting a bad grade on a test. Let’s say that I’m a 7th grade student and I’m also, a straight A student! Every time a test comes around I study super hard for a week. This time I decide that I don’t have to study because I always get an A. The next week I end up bombing the test and my parents are furious at me. I learn from my mistakes and I never make the same mistake again, because why earn from the same mistake twice!

With these examples and reasons II believe that a person learns more from their mistakes then from their successes! Thanks for reading my blog, Learning in Pajamas! Come back for more from me!

We Value What We Struggle For (8th Grade English Assignment #11)

Today for English I’m writing an essay about if we value only what we struggle for! In other words, do we appreciate what we work for more then what is just given to us.

In my opinion, I feel that we do appreciate what we work for a lot more then what is given to us. The reason I feel this way is because, when you work for something you feel like you have put in hours maybe days worth of time to achieve something or even earn up enough money for something. As you do this you realize that you have done the work for this and, if it’s a toy or even an article of clothing, you want to take care of this object and you want it to last as long as possible!

If you are given money, if you ask for it from friends or even family, and you buy some new boots, chances are these boots aren’t going to last as long as those that you could have bought with money that you earned from your job. Although, if you don’t have a job and you want a new bathing suit, how are you going to appreciate this bathing suit enough to care about it? One possible way is doing chores for the money. There is always a way to earn money, whether it’s from a job at Publix to doing chores for family. By the way, you don’t really have to get the money for the bathing suit but you could chores and earn the bathing suit rather than earning money for the bathing suit!

An example of this is that my mom is a very non-messy person. She makes sure that her closet is nice and clean. However, when she was child and didn’t pay for her clothes or her house, her room was a mess. Now, this might have been because she shared a room with somebody else, but my point still made.

Once I get a job I know that I will be a lot more appreciative of the money that I earn. Nowadays, if I get money I want to spend it all at that moment, but when I get my own job and start having to work for my money I will start to want to save it and not spend it on anything that seems cool at the time.

In the end you can tell that we value what we struggle for a lot more than what is given to us. Thanks for reading this on my blog, Learning in Pajamas, Come back for more from me!

My Favorite Color (8th Grade English Assignment #10)

Today for English I will be writing a paragraph on my favorite color.

I have multiple favorite colors, it usually determines on my mood. One of my favorite colors is blue. I like this color because I love blue eyes. I always wish I had blue eyes, so that’s ,most likely, why I love this color.  My second favorite color is purple.  My dad and I painted the rim of the my bedroom wall,  purple! My final favorite color is pink. I think that a lot of Girls favor pink over the other colors. I think this is because when a girl is born they are wrapped up in a pink blanket! Pink, in my opinion, is just a very pretty color! If I had to decide what my all-time favorite color was, I would choose blue. This is because, I will always want my eyes to be blue, so I really like this color!

Apple Pie, The Most American Dessert (8th Grade English Assignment #9)

Today for English I will be writing an essay about how apple pie has been considered the most American dessert for a long time. Why do I think this is, Do I think this is still accurate, and finally What would I choose as the most American dessert?

I think that apple pie is considered the most American dessert for two reasons. One reason is that we have apple pie for thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a very American holiday. We celebrate this day because this was the day that the pilgrims ate with the Indians and we all helped each other, rather than fighting with each other. It is usually a tradition to have apple pie while your family and friends feast on the food that each of you have contributed to create! This all happened in America, which at the time was called “The New Land”, so that is one reason why apple pie is considered the most American desert! The second reason is because of baseball! Baseball is a very American sport, now you might be asking how do apple pie and baseball even relate to each other? Well, after a baseball team wins a game they go out and get some apple pie! Two American things, they might even make each other even more American!

I currently think that apple pie is still the most American dessert. Even though thanksgiving started years and years ago we still celebrate it to this day! This is a day where we all come together and be very thankful for the blessing that have been given to us, whether it’s our houses, family, or even friends, we are still very thankful for it all! During thanksgiving we all gather around a table, some family’s say a prayer based on their religion, others don’t, usually the things you eat are turkey, mashed potatoes, mac n’ cheese, green bean casserole, and for dessert pie, and sometimes you can get a scoop of ice-cream on top of that!

If apple pie wasn’t the most American dessert, I would have to choose either, Cheesecake, or chocolate chip cookies! The reason I would have chosen cheesecake is because it was made in New York and many could argue on what is more American than New York. The reason why chocolate chip cookies would be my next guess is because who doesn’t love a good cookie? We have all types of cookies we have Chips Ahoy, Chips deluxe, you have recipes galore online, and much, much, more!

In conclusion, I think that apple pie is the most American dessert because of Thanksgiving and baseball! Thanks for reading my post in my blog, Learning in Pajamas, Come back for more from me!

Hurricane Irma (8th Grade English Assignment #8)

For today’s blog post I will be writing about my experience in Hurricane Irma! I will be sharing what my family was doing and how I felt during this entire hurricane.

When I first heard about this hurricane I was worried but as it got closer I started getting less and less worried, I really don’t know why. However, once I found out that the hurricane was close to my grandparents I was worried for them. I am scared easily so I’m sure it came as a surprise to my parents when I said that I wasn’t scared.

When Irma finally decided to get here my town got tropical storm weather. That made me feel even less worried because I’ve been through so many tropical storms. Although, I am completely terrified by tornados.

Anyway, my family decided that we would stay in Florida and sleep in the basement. We set up our camping cots and our sleeping bags. The first night we ended the night by watching little house on the prairie or as my family says, “little prairie on the house”. Through the night I was having a really hard time sleeping. Upsettingly there was a tornado warning for our area so we slept even closer together so we could easily be “herded” to our windowless hallway. Luckily my dad knows me so he didn’t tell me about the tornado warning until the next day, that way I would be worrying about that. The next morning, the power went out. I was so bored, I ended up watching movies on my portable DVD player. When my brother’s DVD player died we continued watching movies on mine. A few minutes later mine died, so we moved on to my computer. As you can tell, we watched a lot of movies. Sometimes we would play a short game, but it didn’t last that long. I got so bored so I just got my mom’s iPad are started playing you cam-makeup.

During this I realized how much we depend on electricity. We use it for just about everything we do. We need it for lights, hot water, television, and internet. I think that maybe I should start trying to work on that so whenever I do loose power I am prepared and it’s not something that I am not used to!

On the final day of not having power we started watching Adam Sandler movies! I called it an Adam Sandler marathon, it was so much fun! That night my dad and brother went out to get some gas, and they called to see if we had power and we did! I was happy but also not happy because I really wanted to sleep downstairs again. Luckily, we still got to sleep downstairs because it was cooler down there then in our bedrooms.

This was my experience during Hurricane Irma, at times it was scary, other were stressful, but for me, I was mostly excited! Come back to  Learning in Pajamas for more from me!

My Homeschool Life (8th Grade English Assignment #7)

My Homeschool Life!

For today’s English class I wrote an essay about my homeschool life! I am going to include things that I like about homeschool and things that I don’t enjoy.

Some of the things that I enjoy about homeschool are, the fact that I can take a day off of school and it doesn’t matter, that much, another thing that I like is that I can travel and still be doing school if we have internet. The final thing that I really like about homeschool is that I am free. What I mean by free is that I am free to sit wherever I want to at lunch also I can have recess. They don’t have recess in public school after you finish elementary school. Another way I am free is that I don’t have to ask to use the restroom. In my years of public school, I had to ask to go and a lot of the times the teachers would say no! Now, I don’t have to worry about that.

It is now time for the dreadful part of what I don’t like about homeschool. These few things are that I don’t get to see my friends every day, also I stay home most of the time, unless I have play rehearsals. Finally, the only other person at my school is my brother. I am a very “social butterfly” as my mom says, so I like to hang out with friends and I like to see my friends. The only time I really get to see them is for summer camp and for plays. However, I don’t mind this because if I did see them all the time we might not be as close of friends.

As you can tell a homeschool life is very much different from a public-school life. I am happy that my family made the decision to put my brother and me into homeschool. That’s all from me, Learning in Pajamas, be sure to come back for more!
